Mission Statement

The Campus Safety Escort Service at the University of California, Riverside ensures the safety of students, faculty, and staff by walking them to their destination.

History

The UCR Campus Safety Escort Service (CSES) began during the 1974-75 academic year by Mr. Randy Yates and other residents from the Aberdeen & Inverness Residence Hall out of concern for the safety of others. Two years later, the direction of the Service was placed under the Women’s Resource Center. The Escort desk was set up in the main lobby of the Tomás Rivera Library where it operated until 1998. During 1998-99, the Service was relocated into the newly built Science Library. As the result of popular demand and high usage fall of 2001 marked the return of the Escort Service to the Rivera Library.

The Escort Service was originally equipped with only a telephone and an answering machine. Since then, many changes have taken place in order to meet the campus’ changing needs and increasing enrollment. Among one of the first additions to the Service was the installation of red Escort telephones near the exits or lobbies of most campus buildings. These telephones allow callers to have a direct line to the Escort desk eliminating having to find a campus telephone at night. During the 1995-96 academic year the Dispatch Program was added, which allows the Escort desk and telephone to be attended at all times. Up to that point, the desk was often left unattended and as a result many people went without escorts. The dispatcher also coordinates escorts in the “field” allowing escorts to handle “phoned-in escorts” without coming back to the desk, thus saving time for other people needing an escort.

Through these improvements, the Service reached a milestone during the 1995-96 academic year escorting 8,189 persons thus setting an all-time record. A new record was set with close to 9,000 persons in 1998. The success of the Service was further measured by a 1996 UCR student survey that ranked the Escort Service as the 5th most critical service to the campus. The Service also received the Bayless Leadership Award from 1997 to 2000.
